ARTISTS STATEMENT
I was born to paint.
Growing up in rural Scotland it wasn’t until I was 16 and attending art school in London that paint and I discovered each other. Almost 40 years later and with an award winning career in designing films and commercials all over the world, while living primarily between Los Angeles and Italy, my passion for painting is as strong as ever and my resolve to create works that both challenge and please is bourgeoning.
My work is informed by a deep interest in eastern philosophy. I paint in a range of styles; using a combined array of painterly techniques and collage, both gestural and controlled, toying with representation, symbolism, depth and flatness.
I aspire to inspire my wonder of experiencing the world.
Patrick Lumb’s prizewinning work has been shown widely throughout the UK and in the US and can be found in numerous private collections. He has enjoyed both various gallery group shows and solo exhibitions and his work has been included in many notable open submission competitions.
Patrick Lumb was born in Dorset, England in 1966. At the age of 11 he moved with his family to Scotland and then at 16, he left home to attend The Central School of Art, London. He went on to study Fine Art (Painting) and graduated with B.A. (Hons.) on his 21st birthday from Falmouth School of Art, Cornwall. In 1989 he moved to the US after being awarded a Full Merit Scholarship to attend the prestigious School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he graduated with a Master's Degree in Fine Art, specializing in Film, Photography and Digital Imaging. He then returned to Europe, to take up a teaching position as Head of the Art and Design History Dept. at Oakham School, Rutland UK. In 1995, after a sellout exhibition of his work in Rutland and a solo retrospective show at the The Richard Demarco European Art Foundation in June of that year, he moved to Los Angeles, CA and soon began a successful career in Production Design for Film, Television and the Advertising Industry.
